If you paste some code example into a <pre></pre>
environment, which contains "\" line-continuation for its own
purpose, then those trailing backslashes are interpreted as
wiki-line-continuations, effectively messing up the display of the
preformatted code. Look at this example rendered by wiki and then
look at the source:
This should be line 1 line 2 line 3
but wiki puts them all together onto one.
