UpdateEmailList

This function takes care of subscriping and unsubscribing you from the notification list. This list is stored in $DataDir/emails and contains all email addresses.

If your current cookie has an email address set and you remove it in your preferences, it gets removed from $DataDir/emails. Thus, the email address is not really linked to your cookie. It just seems to be linked because subscribing and unsubscribing happens via Preferences.
