The Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. is the non-profit parent organization of Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikinews, Wikiquote, Wikispecies, Wikibooks, Wikimedia Commons, Meta Wiki and Wikisource. The goals of the foundation are to encourage the growth and development of free content, Wiki-based projects and to provide the full contents of those projects to the public free of charge and without advertising.

Thats not true in this way: in the beginnings, Jimbo Wales has paid for technical infrasturcture for Wiki_p_edia mostly out of his personal money, earned from his company bomis. At present most money for Wikipedia comes from donations. The Wikimedia Foundation has never been founded by earnings from bomis. sansculotte

 innocence> mutante> fwiw, bomis's funding is currently about $1000/month (iirc) whereas the WMF spent 
                      about $40,000 on hardware this quarter, so it's not like wikipedia is entirely funded by evil 
                      porn ;)
